Gargoyle

On the east face of Nelson Cathedral are several of these rain spouts. The cathedral itself is built mainly of marble and not granite as I mentioned yesterday although the latter could form the core of the walls. The later parts were built of concrete.

The light grey stone makes the inside quite bright. It was started in the 1920s and after much discussion and controversy was consecrated in 1972. The style of the gargoyle is rather Art Deco especially the 'wings' behind the ear which are rectilinear and almost chevrons.
