Several old apple trees grow beside a former railway line and each year I intend picking some of the bright red apples which have a pink flesh. Ten days ago the tree was laden but today there were very few apples left which could be reached. The apples were first recorded in1883 and named after a ploughman who was shot by a gamekeeper after stealing apples in Megginch in Scotland. His widow discovered some of the apples in his pocket and subsequently one of the pips grew to become a tree with blood red flesh and became known as The Bloody Ploughman. An apple with the pale flesh from my garden shows the comparison.
