Sunday: Lake That Starts With A D......I Think

We left Fort St John relatively early to head further north, on the Alaska Highway, to Fort Nelson. Even the words, Alaska Highway, sound incredibly romantic to us. So far, the roads are very straight.  We have horizontal scenery, no hills but VERY big skies.

We passed through the small settlements of ‘Wonowon’ (located at mile 101 of the Alaska Highway - see what they did there?) and ‘Pink Mountain’, where we bought coffee from the General Store (we love a General Store!).

We stopped at a lake en route - it’s too small to feature on a map and now I’m kicking myself for not writing down the name, but here it is.  We arrived in Fort Nelson mid afternoon - frankly put, there is very little here.  Our hotel is from another era - we are the only residents and it contains a very extravagant tiki lounge, currently closed due to.........you guessed it......COVID.  We went for dinner and found the doors locked on our return which was adventuresome.  I feel like I’m in ‘The Shining’.

We went of a walk and visited the Fort Nelson Heritage Museum, a collection of eclectic things with no particular common factor.  Cool old cars, though.

We walked down to ‘Dan’s’, the only pub in town, only to find it was closed, due to a fire.  We noticed a few fire damaged places.  We were later told that these were likely insurance jobs as so many local businesses are suffering.  So, pub closed, there was only one other place that was an option, ‘Boston Pizza’.
