Death in the streets

By now you have probably heard that a man, reportedly a right-wing extremist, was shot and killed Saturday night in Portland after a horrifying parade of guns in 600 trucks with Trump 2020 flags on them. We don't know who killed the man; we don't yet even know his name. The person who shot him was hiding in the shadows of a parking garage. It could have been another right-winger (many were heavily armed). It could have been an agent provocateur. It could have been an armed antifascist, although that seems unlikely, as in the history of our country, hundreds, perhaps even thousands, have been killed by right-wing extremists but not one by an antifascist.

That anyone should be killed is horrifying, whatever his politics may be, and we know the man's family must be grieving just as many families of those we love have grieved. Our Mayor, who is in many ways inadequate, nonetheless had the nerve to take on the President, for which we salute him. We are hoping for calm tonight.
