Òbh òbh, West Highland Way day 6
Òbh òbh, oh dear, had I realised just how tricky this bit of the West Highland was going to be I think I would have avoided a there and back route. This was Inversnaid to Inveranan – just over 6 miles, and 12 in total. It was the sort of route I would skipped through many years ago thinking it was just the right side of exciting, these days it was, in places, the wrong side of exciting. At least it was dry, mostly and this step ladder was quite fun, less fun coming back the way. Interspersed with the rocky/boulder sections were some idyllic beaches like this one, about half a mile south of Doune Bothy. I had my morning coffee here, a precisely 11am (having started at 8.15 and mile 3 taking 50 minutes) and then my lunch on the return trip.
As ever the carpark had transformed form empty to bursting by 4pm. The return journey also took longer than expected with a long stream of boy cyclists who were racing to keep ahead of a stream of cars.
The route was probably more interesting than I realised since I was required to keep my eyes on the ground for a good of time. I did search out Rob Roy’s cave (a mile form the car park); there is no cave, rather a number of crevices any one of which could have been the said cave – Rob Roy’s, Robert the Bruce or even, although I think this less likely Bonnie Prince Charlie.
I cheated, somewhat, at the end and eschewed the easy descend into Ben Glas, wishing to avoid the return uphill. Having walked this, in effect twice, I felt any deception was overridden.
Extremely tired after tea and for the first time in while left this blip until the following morning, and also my research diary – about which I received a gentle reminder. Slept from 10.15 to 6.15 – great. Planning an easy canal walk for Monday when it looks like being the only good day, weather wise this week.
