Diary of an Edinburgher

100th Birthday!

Happy 100th Birthday Uncle Pen! (Extra) Though the family celebrations in New Zealand were somewhat curtailed due to Covid lockdowns etc.

JR’s Uncle Pen has had an adventurous 100 years. He was involved in rescuing people from the Wahine disaster (1968), he was a ‘compass swinger’ during the D Day landings at Juno Beach guiding 100 boats, and he sailed on the Arctic Convoys. While on leave in Salcombe, Devon, he was injured (his aunt was killed) when the building he was in was destroyed by a bomb.

Elizabeth took Archie out (this is him sitting watching out for her) so we went into town and popped in to a nice wee wine bar we haven’t been to for ages. All the places were busy, which is good. We raised a glass to Uncle Pen. We had a Wellington coffee, and I did not go in to get my usual a bag of licorice because my bus was just arriving. And for the first time ever, JR was ready to come home on the bus too - she doesn’t like ‘browsing’ round the shops any more...

However, she’s done a bit of online browsing this evening, when we got a heads up on a couple of dining chairs which are now half price in our favourite shop.
