The morning started with bright sun but it didn't last.
By lunchtime the torrential rain was accompanied by rumbles of thunder and the prospect of getting out for a blip seemed highly unlikely.
Suddenly at 4pm the sun reappeared so I dashed over to Stover.
I first noticed a newish batch of coot chicks, out on semi submerged branches trying to tidy up their plumage. I loved the way this one appeared to be checking his appearance.
I also like the way the camera has caught the fast flowing water.
While on my knees at the waters edge photographing the coots, there was suddenly a plop nearby and as I glanced up, I saw the kingfisher fly off with a fish. It must have been in a willow about 10 metres in front of me and I didn't notice. :-(
I saw it or another fly across the lake three times, the most sightings in one day I've had this year. Apparently someone in the hide last weekend captured 3 birds each on a perch at the same time. Better than winning the lottery!
Would that be adults with young as I thought they were solitary birds?
Meanwhile on the other side of the lake (and almost beyond the reach of my lens) the GC Grebes were fishing.
I last saw them when they were courting and they have since had four chicks. Sadly only one survives but it was certainly getting plenty of food.
I watched for ages as one parent hunted while the other stayed with the youngster.
I think it was the male who caught a fish and then carried it back, the full length of the lake, to the female who in turn gave it to the chick.(Extra)
I've never witnessed this before and, not for the first time, wished I had a 600mm lens.
The light was fading fast as I dragged myself away at 7.30pm and by the time I got home it was chucking down again
