the best blue day
The best of days at the coast today, blue sky, blue sea and the gentlest of warm breezes. We again headed north drove through Sandsend but it was rammed with cars so we kept going. Next stop was our favourite, and indeed the Sunday Times's fave having voted it #1 beach in the UK for 2020, Runswick Bay. The small car park at the beach was predictably full so we parked on top of the hill. There were lots of families but spread out on the mile long beach it didn't seem crowded. First we walked around the pedestrian only village with its quaint fisherman cottages and alleys giving glimpses of the sea. It is so beautiful we decided that next May we will rent a cottage here and combine it with our homely stay in Bempton. The first 3 extras are taken on the beach. A winner due to its shallow shelf of sand, rocks for crabbing and small boats in front of the cafe.
After sitting on the beach for our picnic and watching the world go by we decided it was time to take on that steep / very steep walk back to the car.
Next stop was the picturesque village of Staithes, which used to be our favourite until we discovered Runswick a couple of years ago. We parked at Cowbar which is free and a much nicer walk down than from the signed tourist car park. The main blip is the view from just below the car park. By now the tide was in and an ice cream watching the boats bob around in the harbour was our treat.
We drove home very happy after dreaming in lockdown of a day like this. We called in the cottage dropped off our stuff and ended such a day in the only way possible - fish and chips, ate looking out from Flamborough Head, perfect. The last 2 extras are as the sunset, with the smell of salt and vinegar !
