AOG Day 6
It was all go at the Owl Arena today with 3 Gold medals on offer. The first event was “the longest silent flight event” - a bit like Grandma’s footsteps with competitors flying as far as possible towards the judges before they turn around to catch them in the act. Team Screech owl didn’t quite understand the rules and loudly cheered their participant who was caught out after only 3 seconds - better luck next time screechers! But it was Team Barn Owl who took the gold covering over 800m before the judges noticed they had even started - well done Bertie.
Some of the participants for the other two events were arguing about the kit they had to wear, citing major issues as they all looked very similar but Snowy was laughing his head off at their silliness as he knew he had it won right from the off.
Today we went to the Small breeds and Owl Centre near Kington and it was great. Social Distancing and safety was paramount with plenty of sanitizer and hand washing facilities available and a one way system in operation so although there were quite a lot of people there, we felt quite safe. There were over 30 different species including all six British species, and they had produced over 20 owlets this year. It was a wonderful collection. After doing the circuit twice we walked the rest of the route with some lovely rare breeds of farm animals - alpacas, sheep, donkeys, pigs and roaming free around the site were a number of tiny Pygmy goat kids. They were very cute. Also there was a collection of pheasants from around the world, bantam chickens and ducks. We had a super day.
