Where The Romans Had Their Quay.
The area at the far side of the railings was where the Roman army had their port. the river was a lot deeper then. Towards the end of the eighties early nineties some timbers were found and carbon dated indicating that they were from the time when the Roman army was in Alauna, ( Ellenfoot and now Maryport ). This area is under Castle Hill where the Romans had a watchtower. The blue structure in the foreground is a bridge that crosses the river to Castle Hill.
