The Mountain Parrot

Kea are labelled as 'cheeky mountain parrots'. They are cheeky and the only mountain parrot in the world. Maori found the Kea were not afraid of them when they entered the South Island mountains several centuries ago. They were so intrigued by this that they forbade the hunting of the birds and therefore their population didn't start decreasing until westerners appeared on New Zealand shores.
This particular Kea is at the Willowbank Wildlife Reserve, Christchurch.
