Crickets - I'm Looking For Someone To Love (recorded 25 February 1957)
On Buddy Holly's first visit to Norman Petty's studio in Clovis NM he recorded his first big hit, That'll Be The Day, and its B-side I'm Looking For Someone To Love. He was accompanied by Larry Welborn on bass and Jerry Allison on drums. As Buddy was already contracted as a solo performer, they had to come up with a name for the group. Using the theme of insects, popular inspiration at the time, they nearly called themselves The Beetles but settled on The Crickets. Ironically, one of the first songs the Beatles ever played together was originally by the Crickets.
Crickets records were released on the Brunswick label in the US, and his solo records on Coral (though the other Crickets played on many of his solo releases). As both of these labels were subsidiaries of Decca, after his death both Crickets and Buddy Holly would appear on the same compilations, sometimes incorrectly billed as 'Buddy Holly and the Crickets'.
Famously, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, JP Richardson and their pilot Roger Peterson perished en route to Moorhead MN, when their plane crashed in the early morning hours of 3 February 1959.
