nature's can of beans...

...well seeds really.
These gum nuts are the size of a medium size hen's egg and favourite food of the black cockatoos. Watching them take one in claw, use their ferocious beaks as a 'can opener' and make short work getting out the seeds and moving onto the next, is quite something.
Untidy beasties mind you.
No tucking the 'can' into the recycling. It's watch out below.

The cockies are very partial to a large pine cone too and 'eat' them in much the same way as we would an artichoke. Peel off the 'leaves' and the core remains.
Standing under a conifer when this is going on is hard hat country.
