Common Ringed Plover #62
A much better day in Anglesey. In the morning we went to Cemlyn Bay where there is a healthy population of breeding terns - Sandwich, Common and Arctic. It was wonderful to see them on the islands, even if they had thinned a little as we were a tad later than normal. The NWWT lady told us there were over 1000 pairs and they had counted at least 1100 chicks this year. We walked out to the point at Trwyn Cemlyn where we spotted turnstones, a sandpiper and this lovely Common Ringed Plover. We sat on the stones on the beach for ages watching it run from pool to pool until a man with a dog off the lead came along and it flew away! It really annoys me when people just ignore the signage no matter how large and numerous it is. How difficult is it to keep your dog off the beach and on a lead due to ground nesting birds?
Anyway, we continued out and met three birdwatchers who were set up for the day with their scopes firmly trained on the distant birds in the sea. Apparently they had spotted quite a number of good birds so far - Manx Shearwaters, Great Skuas, 3 Choughs and a black guillemot.
My rule is “if I can’t see it with binoculars, then it’s too far away!”
We walked back to the car, had our sandwiches and then went back to the cottage for a zoom meeting with hubby’s family.
A quick trip in to Beaumaris for an ice cream completed our day out - you can’t go on holiday and not have an ice cream if the sun is shining!
We are on our way home tomorrow, but it’s been a lovely little break and great to have a change of scenery.
