Swords in the fell (alt: wet wet wet)
The swords in the ground are symbols of the unification of Norway under Harald Fairhair, they are modelled on 3 iron age swords found in different locations in Norway and are buried in the ground and useless to fight with.
It was a terribly wet day with rain more or less constantly, the swords are on a headland sticking out into a low sweeping bay in the fjord.
I liked the rather small wild flowers dotted around (though there is also a lot of mud and rock) as it gives a bit more life to the picture, but it was really raining too hard to be as to take he time and care over this picture which I think also shows.
Possibly because of the weather I was reminded of a funny incident while kayaking in s similar downpour on the similar terrain of Roskilde fjord- a full viking longship suddenly loomed out of the most in front of us. Not vengeful ghosts, it turned out to be the replica made at the Roskilde museum that takes trips out on the fjord in summer.. it certainly wouldn't have looked out of place here.
There is a whole hiking trail along the shoreline linking sculptures and monuments and archaeological sites, but that will have to wait for next time and drier weather too.
--------****** travel journal entry follows *****-----
After the heights of yesterday today was positively submarine, at least in terms of the weather so we took pleasure in a slow start to the day, packing up and chatting with some fellow tourists - a dutch norwegian blend with similarly aged children, so the kids got on well with Dutch as their common language.
As it was still pouring, an optional hike was off the cards so we decided to visit one of those slightly threadbare around the edges wet weather tourist attractions. In this case the promise of a Viking village with multiple children's activities turned out to be some, admittedly very interesting reconstructed halls, with goats but no activities or recreations of Viking life as no-one had pre-booked it according to the rather hippie person running it (almost certainly a German national who spoke Norwegian to us). Ah well, next time..
Then a drive back to Stavanger, detouring slightly to visit the swords and a nice surprise at the hotel, who upgraded us to a suite. Dinner was a particularly good Thai meal, just what the doctor ordered.
Early start tomorrow for the Bergen ferry..
