Companion Planting
Borage, also know as Starflower, is an annual that flowers June through September. Younger blossoms are pink and older ones are blue. The plant is grown throughout Europe and the US, and is grown for medicinal and culinary purposes • At our house, we grow one borage beside every tomato plant. It’s called companion planting. Why, you ask? Yikes, just take a look at that ugly tomato horned worm!! • The mother moth who lays eggs on tomato plants is confused by the borage and moves on. From experience we can vouch the borage does help but it doesn’t eliminate the worm completely. We still have to inspect the plants daily and remove any we see. Otherwise, they will munch and munch and munch until the plant dies, while they keep getting bigger and bigger and bigger! Just like this one • This worm pic is from 2018, before we knew about borage, and without it you wouldn’t understand what I was blipping about! • Happy Saturday, All!
