De ponte de Strowmondgate
"...Stramongate Bridge, with four arches, which dates from 1794, although it includes parts of an earlier bridge dating from the 17th century. A bridge on this site was first documented in 1379, when records mentioned De ponte de Strowmondgate." (Wikipedia entry)
The bank that is handling the new mortgage is based in a building in Kendal called Bridge Mills. I worked there for Scottish Provident between 1997 and 1999. Each week, I did two days in Edinburgh and three in Kendal. It was the very beginning of my love for Scotland generally and Edinburgh specifically.
I had to go back there, today, to hand over some documents, saving some time by not relying on the post. I must say, it doesn't seem like twenty years ago that I worked there. I remember the runs I used to do from Bridge Mills and walking up into town to go to Smyth's Records and Henry Roberts bookshop (which was based in the house of Captain James Cook's sister).
