Cigarettes and Alcohol

Whilst I do still (very) occasionally consume alcohol, I was reminded by Facebook today that it is now seven years since my last cigarette.
I remember the day well. I had a job at the home of Newcastle United FC, but nothing went right. Equipment not delivered on time, installation engineer delayed and by the time I could start training staff in the use of their new machine, most had been sent home as they had only been paid until lunchtime. Needless to say, I had spent most of the morning on the phone chasing people up, which meant I was virtually chain smoking. Never really understood why I had to light up a fag every time I made a phone call, but that’s the way it was!
When I was eventually headed in a homewards direction I suddenly found that, the first time in 35 years, I actually didn’t want another ciggie. So, when crossing a wide river I wound down the window and tossed out any remaining cigarettes, closely followed by my lighter.
Touch and go for the first few weeks but not had one since. And if I’m not going to reach for one when faced with a global pandemic, I think we can safely say I’m not going to start again.
But, just in case we suddenly get told the Earth is about to be wiped out by an asteroid or something similar, this little fellow remains on standby.....
