Fox Glacier Visit

Today we had perfect weather for our visit to the Fox Glacier. After a reasonably long uphill trek we reached the glacier face, a little out of breath. It was worth ever second of the climb seeing such amazing vistas of green tinged ice, bedrock and mountains topped off with the magnificent blue sky.

Fox Glacier is fed by four alpine glaciers, with the glacier falling 2,600 m (8,500 ft) on its 13 km journey from the Southern Alps down to the coast. It has the distinction of being one of the few glaciers to end among lush temperate rainforest only 300 metres (980 ft) above sea level. The glacier depth is up to 350m.

It has been retreating throughout most of the last 100 years. Not surprisingly it is part of the South Westland World Heritage Area.

Soon it was time for a few photos and then it was up onto the ice. What an experience that was. We were so lucky with the weather as this afternoon it is clouding up again. Greener ice!
I have now made a slight correction to the white balance to better reflect the green tinge of the ice. The rest is straight from the camera.

Thanks to everyone for their comments, stars and hearts over the past few days, and the interest today which helped this photo make it into the Spotlight. It is hard to comment right now but I will get back to all of you in due course.
