The spirit of Britishness

The spirit of Britishness...this is in honour of the amazing discovery of the skeleton of Richard III below a car park in Leicester. For those who do not know their English history, he reigned for only 2 years from 1483 until he died in the Battle of Bosworth in 1485. A good king? Certainly an ambitious king, he is the same chap who is suspected of murdering his nephews to become king - the Princes in the Tower legend. The discovery of his remains is being recognised as one of the most significant finds in archaelogical history. How cool is that?

So what is the link between a typical British High Street and King Richard III? Well not much, other than they both embody the essence of Britishness. Where else in the world can you find the 500 year old remains of a famous king? And below a car park! And the British High Street - taken for granted every day but so quintessentially British. Looking at that picture one immediately knows that this is England.

I have only lived in England for 11 years and come from one of her 'new' colonies, so this history and tradition still manages to impress and often blow my mind.

Oh and by the way, the building that is flying those British flags - the irony is that it is a Lebanese restaurant!
