Bump!
We walked back to the curling pond on Deuchny Hill, and this time I took a long lens and polarising filter. The water wasn't as clear as it had been last week, but I could still see a newt each time it came near the surface.
I read that newts eat tadpoles, but this one was uninterested, even when a tadpole swam into it.
My photography came to an abrupt end when a dog turned up and started paddling. The owner arrived five minutes later and urged it back into the water, right where I was standing with my camera and ignoring my request to go in further away. The clouds of mud put paid to any chance of seeing more.
