Honeycomb?
No, gloriously golden sandstone in the Australian outback.
In June 2003 we drove out from Bourke, in the NSW outback, to explore Mt Oxley, or Oombi Oombi. It rises out of the flat plains about 50km by road from Bourke. It is a mesa or tableland of sedimentary rock which dominates the surrounding flat plains of the area.
We had to get a key from the visitor centre in Bourke in order to gain access to the property where Mt Oxley is situated. The road up to the top was steep and winding and narrow (see the 1st extra photo). We were fairly confident we wouldn’t meet any other vehicles because the visitor centre told us they hadn’t lent any other keys that day. At the top are communications towers and, thankfully, Telstra had sealed the track on the steep ascents.
The views from the top were magnificent. Big country, Australia (see 2nd extra photo).
I had the job of closing the gate on the way out (see 3rd extra photo).
I remember the day well. It was wonderful. When we returned to Bourke that evening I realised I had left my laptop in the boot of the car that morning. The result – one very dead laptop!! The rough roads had been too much for it.
