Silly Saturday ....
.... chipping sparrow.
For the past few years we have had a bird feeder hanging in the backyard that is usually quite busy .... mostly used by the house sparrows. But for some reason this year these sparrows ... and there's a LOT of them ... have been bothering the Ruby-throated hummingbirds that are coming around. Sadly, we don't see the hummingbirds all that often even though we do everything possible to attract them.
Seeing the house sparrows going after the hummingbirds is maddening so today Richard took down and moved that feeder trying to minimize the birds that are back by the trumpet honeysuckle that the hummingbirds love. Watching all the birds flying in to the area that the feeder used to be was super funny ... and a little bit silly! But I feel awful for all the other birds that have visited this feeder in the past ... like this beautiful chipping sparrow sitting on the pole where the feeder used to be! BTW: these chipping sparrows aren't the problem!
There are plenty of other feeders around so we hope that the birds will eventually find these and leave our hummingbirds alone. Speaking of which ... I have finally got a semi-decent photo of the female hummingbird ... see extra. Sorry for the terrible background!
