Woodland Pool

This pond is in Bush Wood, at the northern end of Wanstead Flats. A week ago, it was a sheet of ice, but the past week has brought warmer weather and rain, and it's now as full as I've seen it. It's the larger (and more accessible) of the two ponds in the wood, but even so, it often dries out in the summer to damp marshland with no visible standing water.

Although the sunshine suggests a warm spring morning, there was a fierce northerly wind blowing, bringing temperatures just above freezing, even in the relative shelter of the trees.
