#5 'A history of Chailey in 50 images'
The fifth image in my history of the parish in 50 images. This week we reach an awkward period - the 12th century - with rather limited photographic opportunities. I wanted to have at least one image that represented the industrial past of the area. Hammer ponds would be suitable but, so far as I know, are all on private land. However, the area is dominated by a sandstone ridge and along that ridge are a large number of small sand and sandstone quarries which date from the medieval period. Difficult things to photograph, but this is the face of one sandstone quarry. The trackway that was used to haul stone blocks up from the quarry to the top of the ridge can still be picked out among the trees.
