The crusades were considered a penitential exercise and historians now debate the motivations of those common folk who followed the crowd and fought, despite no clear understanding of what the cause was for, or who the enemy was.

Almost a reaction to the subjugation that they felt and an opportunistic way of winning respect and bettering themselves at the sake of others and despite not believing in the cause.
