Letting the days go by

In addition to the afternoon walk, another part of our daily lockdown routine is to watch something together in the evenings. There have been a few series - we particularly enjoyed both seasons of 'After Life' - and also some films. Over the last few days, Dan and I have watched 'Groundhog Day', 'The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty', and 'The Shipping News'. Gratifyingly, he's loved all of them.*

Last weekend, I asked whether he fancied watching 'Stop Making Sense', the film of Talking Heads playing live by Jonathan Demme that is widely regarded as the best concert film of all time. Dan was up for it, tickled by the review on the DVD box describing it as "the 'Citizen Kane' of concert movies", which is how he has referred to it for the last couple of days.

Our set up consists of a projection screen and projector, hooked up to my laptop, and a largish bluetooth speaker. It's not the slickest of home cinema arrangements but it works for us. Tonight I added a DVD player into the mix since I figured the sound off the DVD would be better than streaming.

Irritatingly, though, the sound was *just* out of sync with the film, which we thought we could live with but pretty quickly changed our minds. So I bought the film on Amazon Prime and we continued from where we'd left off. Well, if anything the sound was better and the picture certainly was.

I'd said to Dan we could skip past any songs he didn't like but we watched the whole film start to finish and I think I he really enjoyed it. (His only criticism was the small section where David Byrne is messing around with the standard lamp and I must admit I'm inclined to agree with him!)

*I feel I'd like to make clear here that on the days she's at the house, Abi is invited on our walk and to watch films with us. She almost invariably responds with a theatrical "NO!".
