This is Chobham Village Hall. Opened in 1888 at the height of Queen Victoria's reign, it has stood witness to two World Wars, the global influenza pandemic of 1918 - 20 and countless other national and local historical events. Now it is shut up until the present storm passes. It is a hub of community activity and, facing the recreation ground, it would have been abuzz with people last Friday if the Chobham Carnival had gone ahead. I miss popping into the Country Market held there every Thursday morning to buy a jar of delicious homemade marmalade, especially as I've now finished my last jar. I should have stocked up!
