Radical steps

Earlier in the day, Dan and I were discussing our walking plans for the afternoon. 
"I've got a guitar lesson, five to six", he said. 
"That's no problem, we'll be back by then", I replied.

I don't know what's wrong with me sometimes. Who has a guitar lesson at five to six. OF COURSE, he meant from five until six. 

Anyway, as a consequence of this misunderstanding, we ended up leaving in a hurry at four o'clock, this afternoon, when the penny finally dropped. We don't usually do the same walk two days on the trot but we only had time to do the river walk, which is a shade over three miles.

We do have minor variations that we take along the way, though, and one of those is whether we walk up Mill Brow or go along to the Radical Steps. Today it was the steps. The sign at the bottom says they were installed in 1820 but, looking online later on, a lot of people suggest 1819. 

My suspicion was that the signwriter would have done her or his homework* so I kept looking and, indeed, a couple of more thoroughly researched websites do say 1820. The ones that say 1819 contain very similar information and I suspect the authors have all copied the same (mistaken) source or from one another. 

So, I'm going with 1820. Two hundredth anniversary, this year!

*I am genuinely perplexed why I had this faith in the signwriter's attention to historical detail given the profession's generally cavalier approach to the everyday apostrophe.
