Lockdown Day 29 - Keeping out of the Wind

Another windy day, despite the glorious clear blue skies and warm sunshine.  We took the decision that a short drive to reach an area that was predominantly wooded and/or sheltered was in order.  We'll probably only do it on the odd occasion, but we felt we could maintain the social distancing guidelines without making any compromises.

The Avenue at Chillington is a belt of mature trees for much of its length.  Unfortunately, we weren't aware that there was a diversion because of forestry work taking place.  We were fortunate in that the work was in only one section, which we could detour around.

We even took out some lunch and found a lovely sheltered spot adjacent to this bridge.  I love that the previous board and now the Canal and Rivers Trust have retained these iron bars on the edges of some bridges, which were used to reduce the damage caused by ropes dragging across the soft clay bricks.  As you can see they suffered a fair amount of damage themselves!  To think that they were caused by horse drawn boats more than a century ago.
