Day 31 - Cooper Car Company blue plaque
A different type of blue plaque - for the Cooper Car Company in Hollyfield Road , Surbiton. Rather apt as Stirling Moss died last week and he did drive for the Cooper team. From this garage which was constructed in 1957/58 Charles Cooper, his son John and their team of engineers designed and manufactured the racing cars that won the 1959 and 1960 Formula One World Championships. The Mini Cooper was launched in 1961, John Cooper had suggested it to the British Motoring Corporation (BMC) and then developed a racing version of the Mini Cooper which won the Monte Carlo Rally in 1964. Cooper cars relocated to Byfleet in 1965 and the Metropolitan Police then used the garage as a car depot, including two Mini Coopers in their fleet. In 2015 the present owner bought the premises from the Cooper family and it is now a Porsche Specialist.(see extra)
