Shelducks

Today's the day …………………………. to fight

You can't miss these shelducks on the Dee Estuary just now.

For a start, they are pretty big - they are one of our largest ducks, growing as big as some geese.  They are mainly coastal, feeding on small invertebrates that are found in the mud of estuaries and sandy beaches.  But they have spread inland - as flooded gravel pits with sandy shores and gravel banks also provide a perfect feeding ground.

The other reason you are going to notice them, especially at this time of year, is that they are very noisy - and very belligerent (see extra).  Those males are in a bad mood and looking for a fight.  They have to determine their strength and to pick partners by using their strong wings to hit each other.

It all looks a bit scary - but no doubt the best duck will win in the end …………….
