Probably the only Bank you can Trust...
Jodrell Bank, that is.
And also probably the most powerful DAB receiver I've ever seen, although it gets it's broadcasts from little green men in remote galaxies which must be more interesting than the cricket commentary.
The picture is of the 78 metre Lovell Telescope. If this was a camera lens, it would -and is - taking radio pictures at a focal length of 22,900 mm at f0.3
(similar to the exif data of some blippers). It was built in the mid 1950's out of whatever they could scrounge - for instance, the two main bearings that make it go up and down (not too technical, I hope) were originally 15 inch gun-turret bearing from a couple of WW2 battleships. At the time of building, it was the biggest steerable radio telescope in the world and, is still the third largest today.
I would really love to get a picture of this in daylight and a bit closer. It's just down the road, so I might do that.
What is it looking at today? (I hear you ask)
Today it's looking at radio source B 1039 - 19 of course
I'm amazed you even had to ask...
