Snowfields Cottage on Bearsted Green

Early mistiness gave way to brilliant sunshine and a beautiful blue sky. We walked this morning then spent the afternoon outside in the back garden.

Susan deadheaded, watered and fed. I put a second coat on the conservatory windowsills, then planted a few left over early potatoes in bags I found when clearing out the shed earlier in the week.

The greenhouse is filing up nicely with seed trays, small lettuces and a trough where I’ve down peas for their shots. Been meaning to do this for many a season. Now I’ve got around to it !

Today’s blip is of Snowfields Cottage, a late 16th/early 17th century cottage with 18th century front which is mathematically tiled. This is a style used extensively in the South East where overlapping tiles are nailed to walls with wooden planks and then mortared to give the appearance of brickwork. This certainly gives a very good impression of brickwork.

Snowfields Cottage is part of a collection of buildings in an area called Snowfields. Snowfields itself and Garden House were once the home of Baroness Orczy author of the Scarlet Pimpernel. Little Snowfield is where the Baroness Orczy’s mother lived for a time. So ends today’s lesson.
