From Where I Sit...
...and sit and sit and sit...
It’s raining today so I took this picture from my customary morning paper reading spot on the couch. The NYTimes comes on Sunday and wouldn’t you know it? Today was their Travel issue. They had a long explanation about how they had thought about changing to a Stay at Home issue but decided to go ahead with the original plan, “but from our homes we can think about the world and our relationship to it. At a moment when borders are closing and travel is mostly forbidden, these stories read like dispatches from a world we did not fully appreciate....one in which we were free to move around the globe. We hope they provide you with some comfort...”
So I sat on the couch and read about traveling to Chernobyl, Venice, Estonia and Turks and Caicos.
Then I did the four extra pages of puzzles, crossword and otherwise and skipped all the articles about the criminal ineptitude at the top of our government. I just didn’t want to go there today.
I attempted to get somewhat caught up on Blipfoto. Instead I got sucked in to all the stories people are sharing, and they are truly uplifting...babies being born, weddings going on or cancelled, families stranded far from home, loved ones separated from each other, people dying and buried without funerals, people who work in hospitals, deliver stuff to our doors and mail to our mailboxes, the grocery stores and restaurants struggling to provide take-out food and struggling to stay open, follow the rules and reassure their customers. We are all heroes and we are all doing our part to protect ourselves and each other. We are all frightened and have our moments of panic, but we pull ourselves together and soldier on. At least on Blipfoto we know something about being kind, forming virtual friendships and supporting each other from a safe distance.
So I’m still sitting on the couch writing this note of gratitude to a community which has kept me going and (sort of) focused through all the craziness. And apologies for not keeping up with comments. The stories are just too compelling, the answers too complicated.
I really do believe we will come out of this better and stronger. We will see how the planet can heal. We will have learned something about all being up against an unseen enemy we can only fight as a group.
We are truly all in this together
I hope you are all keeping well.
