Lily the Pink
This morning I managed to reach my one-and-only local supermarket before the locusts had had an opportunity to strip the shelves bare. I saw people with massively over-filled trolleys and still no attempt by the shop to limit purchases, despite noticeably greater numbers of additional security staff. I have heard of other shops elsewhere who will allow customers to purchase two of any one item but the third has its price increased astronomically to deter the selfish.
Yes I can understand that if you are likely to be confined at home for 14 days because a family member is showing signs of having the virus then you would need to have a fortnight's worth of food in stock at home, but not a year's supply. I imagine that much of this food will ultimately go to waste.
But because I spent an entire working week finding nothing at all available, I did at least buy myself two loaves of bread, and that entirely fills the ice-box in my fridge. Still no eggs. Still no rice. Success with potatoes at last though.
Later I ventured out to the restaurant I noticed in Rochester yesterday, and on my way there I spotted this lipstick-pink Beamer complete with diamanté steering wheel. Result!
I joined the queue waiting at the restaurant's serving window. Everything they have inside is listed outside along with its price and a note to the effect that no customer may purchase more than one of any item. First I thanked them for being so enterprising and providing such a useful community service and then I asked if they would be open tomorrow. The reason for that question was because a single unit of eggs is a tray of 30 and there was no way I could get 30 eggs safely home at a distance of 1 mile on foot with only a tote bag, but I could return tomorrow with egg-boxes. Yes, but the eggs on view were all they had with no more planned deliveries, they could however let me have a box, so that is what happened.
And lo! Without going bat-shit crazy I have a fortnight's worth of food at home (barring fresh fruit and veg, which I cannot possibly stockpile so I'll have to take my chances with that).
