POG's Journal

Rough and tumble.

Arrived with good time at the Lee Valley Velopark in readiness for the BC Level 2 Mountain bike training course. There were 10 of us on the two-day course. It was quite clear after the introduction I was in the bottom 3rd with regard to Mountain Biking skills…

After a morning of theory, we headed out onto the trail for our first practical exercise that we had preselected to coach. I had selected track stands that I was quite familiar with as it is something that originated from track cycling in the velodromes.

The session went well, and all was tickety boo… When not coaching you become the rider for the other coaches… During one of the other coach’s session I managed to crash and do a rather nice roll down a bank landing on my poorly hip with the bike on top of me… After a quick check of myself and bike the only thing damaged was a severely bruised pride but nothing else.

I completed my duties as rider for the remaining coaches and then back into the classroom for the remainder of the day.

As normal we had to plan another session to be assessed on in the Final day. Back at my digs for the weekend I got cleaned up and then did the prep work for the Sunday session. By hip felt very sore and everything was stiffening up and I started to get concerned about being able to ride the bike on Sunday.

The corridor in the photo seemed like a mile long when I hobbled along on my way to dinner… Once back in my room I was getting a little concerned, then I came up with a master plan… I started drinking lots of water as I sat on the bed trying to get my leg and hip moving with some gentle stretching. I also had the heating in the room maxed out…

More and more water was consumed and the hip was moving a bit better as the evening progressed. The theory was that I would have to wake multiple time during the night to have a wee, the walk to the bathroom would keep the hip moving… Time will tell.

More tomorrow.
