La Mezquita, Cordoba

Thanks to the excellent Spanish railway system, we were in Cordoba almost before we left Malaga this morning.

This is the interior of La Mezquita, one of the largest mosques ever built (and it is twice as big inside as out). It illustrates well the history of Spain, having been built over the remnants of a 5th century Visigoth basilica, which in turn was built over a Roman temple. After the Christian reconquest of Spain in the 13th century it was converted into a Catholic cathedral, although nearly all of the mosque interior has survived.

Rained for much of the afternoon, but on arrival we'd checked into a smart guesthouse 'Don Paula', where we retreated to later in the day.
