International Women's Day
Born Maria Skodowska in Warsaw in 1867, Marie Curie defied the odds to discover radioactivity. She is the only person in history to have won the Nobel Prize twice. She was a feisty, uncompromising character who frequently bruised her head from banging against the glass ceiling of prejudice against women. She died in 1934, aged 66, of anaemia brought on by exposure to high levels of radiation. Without her pioneering work on radioactivity we would not have X-rays or modern cancer treatment.
A film has been made of her life which will be in our cinemas on March 20th.
It seems fitting to highlight this amazing lady on International Women's Day.
