Eynesbury House
Eynesbury House at Kingswood is another stunning example of Adelaide's early architecture. This is an historic house in my home area, as I lived at Kingswood for many years, and this is the adjoining suburb to Mitcham where many of my blips come from.
Building of this ornate Victorian mansion took part in two stages. The first owner, William Letchford built the first part of the house and then sold the site to George Wilcox who enhanced the building significantly and named it Eynesbury.
The house still survives today with very few changes having been made to its original architecture. In many ways it is reminiscent of the Edmund Wright designed Paringa Hall in Somerton (a beachside suburb) especially with the three storey central tower forming a feature of the front of the house. Seen better in LARGE.
What has changed over the years for Eynesbury House is the land surrounding it. Originally the house stood on 14 acres of land but over the years that land has been swallowed up by streets and houses as suburbia has encroached on this once isolated landmark. Today the house stands on a mere 2 acres of property fronting a main road.
Back in 1990 Eynesbury House was acquired by a private college who took the house's name as its own. The college outgrew the site in a few short years and moved into new premises in the city. Prior to the college owning the site it was owned by the Hare Krishna Movement and used as their place of worship.
It is now privately owned and the present owner is a collector of classic cars. He has so many he no longer has garage space for them. There are half a dozen cars with protecting covers over them that have been sitting in front of the house for several years. Needless to say they never move, so I must apologise for them ruining my otherwise aesthetic blip! Straight from the camera with light cropping of some cars!
The reason I am so late in putting up my blip tonight is that I have been watching Roger Federer narrowly beating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in a fantastic tennis match
