Rainbow over Grasmere

It was an experience which will stay with us for a good while. First we woke to unexpected snow which even then was melting which added to the already excessive water on fields and roads.

We met with Adam and Jane for a “walk” from Grasmere to Silver How and perhaps on to Blearigg. As it was raining by now we span the coffees in Emma’s Den for a good while only venturing out at about 1.00pm. The roads were flooded in places as we walked along to the start of the footpath.

The path throughout was a running stream and more like a waterfall on the upper reaches where water tumbled over the steps of the built paths sometimes being blown back uphill by the force of the wind.

The worse conditions of course were at the summit cain of Silver How. It’s only about 1300 feet but the wind made it impossible to stand up unless you were braced against your walking poles.

Rain was horizontal, stinging your face. Even so, there were glimmers of sunshine through clouds torn ragged by the wind which led to many rainbows.

We quickly agreed going any further would be insane especially as it would be into the teeth of that wind. The way downs was the way we came up, negotiating that waterfall until we reached the boundary wall to make our way back to Grasmere and a very welcome bowl of soup with bread.
