Going express...

So I got a train I thought I'd missed because it was 15 minutes late

It's confusing at the best of times because it comes into New Street Station as nine carriages and straddles platforms 3a & 3b 

the four carriages on 3a go to Walsall and when they uncouple them the five on 3b go to Crewe and they exit the station in opposite directions.

Today the delay was because something had  hit a bridge back down the line but then there was the issue of a problem at Aston and the Walsall bit was "going express" out the back way (missing 7 stations) so there was a mass exodus leaving very few passengers....

we were still 7 minutes late at the end of the journey!
