Slippery Road Ahead

This is the glassy surface of the road outside my house this evening. My estate has no through roads and only one exit, so is low down the list of priorities when gritter routes are being mapped out. When the snow fell on the road on Friday, it was compacted down by people driving on it. Then after enduring a couple of cycles of thawing and re-freezing, it formed a layer of hard, shiny black ice.

Cycling into work wasn't too bad today but, in the presumed absence of a thaw tonight, I think I'm getting the train in tomorrow.
