To the Victor Goes the Spoils
That's how the saying goes, but in the case of the begging pelicans...I wonder...I wonder if they really are the victors.
A group of birds gather as the afternoon fishing charter boats come in. The captains filet the fish, and then...comes the dilemma. Ideally, they should put the bones of the fish into the garbage cans. But, they don't. They throw them over the edge of the boat to the pelicans.
Why do they do this? In my mind, 3 possible reasons.
1. They think they're helping the birds.
2. They don't like the birds. They think the birds are a nuisance.
3. They're just lazy.
So, why aren't they the victors if they get the scraps?
Some of the scraps are so big that the pelican tries to swallow the fish skeleton, and gets it stuck in their throats. When it does that, they can't go to the pelican doctor. The fish carcass stays there, the bird can't eat, and then they die.
I wish they were smart enough to walk away from the scraps, but that's probably not going to happen.
Blame the birds? Blame the captains? Who knows?
In the Extras, look who else joins the fray.
