Peek-a-boo!
Not sure whether this was left over from a Halloween event at Carisbrooke Castle.
Very blustery day today. Managed to get a look round the parapets before the weather to turned and the wind picked up and the rain came down.
Fortunately there was a fantastic museum that was set up by the last occupant of the castle Princess Beatrice, daughter of Queen Victoria, as a memorial to her husband Prince Henry of Battenberg. It provides a great place to get out of the rain and have a look around. Many items cover the history of the castle but a lot of it comes from the history of the Isle of White and the many people who live and have lived there.
One of those was the seismologist John Milne who set up home near Carisbrooke after spending many years in Japan at the Tokyo Imperial University where he perfected his seismographs to aid in the detection of earthquakes that plague the island of Japan. The chalk of the Isle of White is apparently excellent for conducting the effects of earth quakes.
Within the museum they have a seismograph that is linked to Iris an earthquake monitoring institute (https://www.iris.edu/hq/) where the effects they detect are shared along with other sensors world wide that allow them to pinpoint the epicentre of the shock and it’s strength. Anything over a 5 on the Richter scale and the sensor in the museum will pick it up.
