Times Like These
Back when the boys were younger and the new Wembley was finished I asked them if they wanted to see England play the inaugural international against Brazil. The eldest son rose and headed into the open net and ran off arms aloft, the younger blocked the pass booted into the crowd and walked away from the invitation.
Eldest and I went to the game, his team, his tribe, mine too and what a night.
But I was going to take youngest one day.
One day came, but not to see England but The Foo Fighters, his team, his tribe, and mine too, and what a night.
They’ve left home now, all grown up and forging their own lives in their own spaces. This week they both phoned home.
Eldest wanted to talk football and playing, excited and dreaming, so we did.
Youngest wanted to talk guitars, excited and dreaming, so we did.
There are some days, some times, some people who remind us to learn to live, and live again.
