And then it was Gone
We have been slowly working our way around the garden over the 10 years we have lived here. There is an out-building that was surrounded by trees (overgrown weeds), thistles, brambles, ivy, plus stones, old tiles and builder debris from when it was renovated some 30 years ago. This week, we attacked what we thought might be a wall plus the leylandii that had grown to be unmanageable, but had been put at the road boundary as a screen. As with many of this type, ineffective pruning (not by us) had left bare patches and they were not doing the job at all. When I cut through one and counted the growth rings, it looked to be around 40 years old. So on we went. The pic shows Mrs SoL at the back near the out-building, the line of cleared trees and the so-called wall. We found that the wall wasn’t a wall, just a collection of stones in a line which we are now moving. A new fence will go up as soon as possible, but I spent a chunk of the day trying to find the ‘borne’ (boundary marker) at the corner of the property. No luck so far, but the local farmer stopped to chat and told me that he would clear the field-side of the wall that runs off at 90 degrees (off to the right of the direction of the picture). I offered payment, but he refused, so he will be back soon with his tractor/digger. He is a very nice chap. Artefacts found include a very nice green bottle, dating from some time ago - will try and get a date on that, plus a rusty old large key. We are still on our diet; the temptation to open some wine was only denied us because we have no wine in the house at the moment. Phew. Mrs SoL is now talking about breaking out the mint chocolate things we were given for Christmas. I’m trying to delay getting them from the hiding place. I doubt I will be successful.
