Bowled over

We had an evening of bowling and burgers to celebrate Gemma's 30th birthday - she is 7 months pregnant so cocktails and sushi were out of the question unfortunately. It did give us all an opportunity to don these fetching Velcro shoes though, what is the deal with bowling shoes? Are they meant to help you slide up to the alley, or stop you from sliding right down it?
