Battle of Towton
Today I walked through the beautiful countryside that I am fortunate to be surrounded by. It is a peaceful, serene place to live.
However in March 1461 this was the setting for The Battle of Towton, part of the War of the Roses and possibly the
largest and bloodiest battle ever fought on English soil.
The two huge armies, estimated at between 50,000 – 65,000 men, confronted each other in the middle of a snowstorm on fields here with a death toll estimated at 28,000.
It's almost incredible to imagine this place knowing such horror and barbarism. It puts life into perspective.
