Revolver

Our day took a different turn mid-afternoon. All has been going well. More tidying up. Trips to the tip and piles for charity shops growing.

We moved further into the attic clearing away.

My sister in law unearthed a suitcase which contained a Gordon Highlanders’ long sporran and medals from WWII belonging to my late “aunt’s” husband who served, amongst other places in Italy. Lots of paperwork and a lovely leather holster.

Inside was a heavy revolver. No ammunition.

In the 60+ years I had known my aunt she had never mentioned it once. She may never have known it was there.

However, it still had the firing pin and the barrel was clear. So on the phone to the police who were round within 30 minutes closely followed by the firearms squad who confirmed it needed to be deactivated and took it away.

Not quite what we had been expecting! There was no clear serial number but we’ll see if we can find out more about whose it was. Our uncle’s or his father in law’s.

Apparently such incidents are more common than you’d think. Who knows what lurks in attics when you really look!
